Le projet CARIBSAT, coordonné par l'Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD - Martinique, UMR ESPACE-Dev) consiste à concevoir et mettre en œuvre un Observatoire sur l’Environnement à l’échelle des petites Antilles basé sur un Atlas géographique dynamique alimenté par l’acquisition et le traitement d’imageries satellitaires, de données environnementales sol et de chroniques hydrométéorologiques.

A travers le projet CARIBSAT, la télédétection et l’approche spatiale constituent : une plateforme de collaboration multidisciplinaire de recherche scientifique

• un outil de formation d’étudiants et d’experts
• un outil d’évaluation, de gestion et d’aménagement des territoires considérés, mais aussi
• un vecteur de rapprochement entre acteurs publics et privés dans chaque île, de collaboration régionale dans la caraïbe et d’ouverture à la coopération européenne et internationale.

Le projet CARIBSAT utilise des images SPOT et radar (ENVISAT) acquises par la station SEAS de Guyane. La plateforme opérationnelle du projet est domiciliée à la Martinique.

The CARIBSAT project - managed by the Institute of Research for Development (IRD - Martinique, UMR ESPACE-Dev) - aims at conceiving and implementing an instrument to monitor the Environment in the Lesser Antilles based on an online geographic atlas supplied by the acquisition, processing and analysis of satellite images, ground environmental data as well as hydro-meteorological reports.
CARIBSAT is meant to provide the region with operational data in the perspective of contributing to a sound environmental management and a sustainable development. More specifically, the project is targeted towards the preservation of the biodiversity in land and sea, the management of the risks implied by natural disasters and the impact of climate change through the following activities :

• Monitor by creating an online platform for interdisciplinary scientific research,
• Train and educate by building programmes for the training of students and experts,
• Support policy making processes by developing this tool as an instrument for the assessment, management and planning of the target territories,
• Integrate by making this platform a vehicle for cooperation between public and private organisations in each island, between the territories of the Lesser Antilles archipelago and an engine for regional and European cooperation.

CARIBSAT is using Spot and other satellite types images collected by the SEAS IRD station in French Guyana. The operational platform is located in Martinique.
